Jewel Caterpillars, or Slug Caterpillars, are the larva of any one of eighty or so different moth species in the family Dalceridae. Spininess is a common trait among larval butterflies and moths, but these animals are unique in their ability to coat themselves in a thick, gelatinous mass. This forms beads around the spines, creating an elaborate, colorful display to ward off most predators, hence the name.

This adaptation serves another useful purpose, too: distraction and defense. As shown here, many predators have a hard time reaching the caterpillars' main body through the mucous mesh. The most they can do is remove single beads or blobs at a time, distracted while their intended prey makes their escape. It's a clever strategy that ensures at least one more day closer to adulthood.
